Supreme Court Upholds Ruling in Journalist Gadzhiev’s Case
On 9 July 2026, the Russian Supreme Court considered a cassation appeal against the sentences handed down to Dagestani journalist Abdulmumin Gadzhiev, businessman Kemal Tambiev and lawyer Abubakar Rizvanov in a fabricated terrorism case.
The court upheld the ruling, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported, citing relatives of the convicted men. In 2023, Gadzhiev was sentenced to 17 years in a high-security penal colony after being accused of financing and participating in terrorist activities. Tambiev and Rizvanov received sentences of 17.5 and 18 years respectively.
Memorial has recognised all three defendants as political prisoners.
In 2025, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the grounds relied upon by the Russian courts were untenable and awarded Gadzhiev €6,000 in compensation.
